The Rumbelle Fanfic Fandom Awards Extravagnza Thingie
Hello, everyone, this is Cranky with an update about Secret Santa 2014. 3 years strong - booyah!
Some of you will note (and I’ll agree) that it’s stupidly early in the year to start talking about this, but they’ve already got Halloween decorations out in the market, and autumn is fast upon us.
There are two orders of business which I’d like community feedback on before Risk and I sit down and see what’s what. This is an event for the Rumbelle community, and the community is the only thing that makes it good, so I think it’s important to get some participant buy-in.
Item 1: Making Anonymous Asks (Stocking Stuffers) to your Partner Mandatory
Point A: It’s More Fun: Over the past 2 years, we’ve seen that the Asks are very often more important and more jubilant than the actual gift exchange. And the gift exchange is pretty damn impressive. Making Asks mandatory would guarantee that nobody misses out on the love. My proposal is to have a 1 Ask / Week Minimum, which is not a very big commitment to keep.
Point B: It’s More Accountability: The only down-side to RSS is when we get Santas who fail to deliver. One of the easiest ways for us to track this is when we get complaints that a Santa hasn’t sent or answered their Stocking Stuffers for a good long time, but the most we can do is go bother that person and hope for the best.
With mandatory Asks, we might have more time to re-assign buddies when there are no-shows or real life gets in the way. A consequence of not sending Asks 2 or 3 weeks in a row would be that we give the prompt to someone else. It would be by report only, so if you worked out with your partner that you were going to be away from the computer on holiday or doing finals for a couple of weeks, we wouldn’t care about that.
Point C: It REQUIRES Anon Ask be Enabled: Some of you may see this as a detriment, but it makes things a lot simpler for us administratively.
Item 2: Do you want sign-ups later (around and after Thanksgiving) or earlier (around Halloween)?
Point A: Doing it all in Mid November is No Longer an Option: I’m going on holiday from November 8 - 22, and I’m not leaving the whole sign-up process to poor Piggy.
Point B: You All Procrastinate Anyway, so Let’s Wait until after American Thanksgiving: I’m not saying that a week less love is a good thing, just that it shouldn’t impact most people’s actual writing / drawing / crafting timetables. I know this, you know this: the last-minute MAKE THE THING! posts give most of you away :P And, you know, it might be nice not to have this interrupt your jack o’lantern reblogging.
Point C: More Love For Everybody: By the same token, a week or 2 extra work and Stocking Stuffer time isn’t bad either. More love for everybody! We also wouldn’t have to start until the usual time, which is mid-November, but could still get the sign-ups and partners (aka the hard work) done early.
Your opinion matters. What do you think?
